Celine Dion made a spectacular return to the live stage on Friday, performing Edith Piaf's classic "L'hymne à l'amour" to close the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
A Love Anthem to Remember
Artistic director Thomas Jolly shared the inspiration behind Dion's performance, telling Reuters, "In the ceremony, we have a love anthem, and that's 'L'hymne à l'amour.' We all wanted to finish the show with this song, and our first idea was very simple and clear. We wanted to ask the best singer to sing love, and this is Celine Dion. It was obvious for us to ask her to close the ceremony."
Overcoming Health Challenges
The 56-year-old singer revealed in late 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder causing muscle rigidity and spasms. This condition forced the multiple Grammy winner to cancel her tour dates for 2023 and 2024. Dion, who began her career singing in French, had not performed live since March 2020 in New Jersey.
A Proud Moment for Canada
Quebec Premier Francois Legault expressed his pride on social media, writing, "How proud we are! Our Celine singing Edith Piaf's 'L'hymne à l'amour' at the Opening Ceremonies of the Paris Olympic Games." Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also chimed in, saying, "A proud Quebecer from Charlemagne is on stage at the Opening Ceremony! Celine Dion is a Canadian icon, an incredible talent, and she overcame a lot to be there tonight. Celine, it's great to see you singing again."
Speculations Confirmed
Dion, best known for the "Titanic" theme song "My Heart Will Go On," was first spotted in Paris on Tuesday, sparking speculation about her appearance at the Olympics. Her performance on Friday night was a triumphant return, celebrated by fans and dignitaries alike.
