Earlier, the council set the cash value for Zakat Al-Fitr at Dh25 per person. Muslims are obligated to pay this amount on behalf of themselves and those under their care, including spouses and children.
Why Cash Matters
Zakat Al-Fitr is traditionally paid in staple foods like rice, dates, or barley, with 2.5 kg per person being the standard. However, the council explained that in today’s world, cash is often more practical and beneficial for the poor.
Quoting religious scholar Abu Jafar Al-Tahawi, the council stated: “Paying the value is better, because it is closer to the benefit of the poor, as he buys with it what he needs immediately.” This flexibility allows recipients to meet their specific needs, whether for food, clothing, or other essentials.
Supporting the Needy Before Eid
One of the key objectives of Zakat Al-Fitr is to help the less fortunate celebrate Eid without financial stress. The council urged worshippers to pay Zakat Al-Fitr on time through trusted entities like the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, the Zakat Fund, or licensed charitable organizations.
