In an extraordinary encounter, a Bryde's whale, measuring an estimated 9 to 10 meters, was spotted at the Port of Fujairah, as announced by the Fujairah Environment Authority on Friday.

This remarkable appearance underscores the emirate’s role as a haven for marine life.

The migratory whale entered the port area, raising concerns about its safety while ensuring uninterrupted port navigation.

The Fujairah Environment Authority, in collaboration with the Port of Fujairah and the Fujairah Research Centre, swiftly deployed a team of specialists to monitor the whale and guide it back to its natural migratory route.

Seeking further expertise, the Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Centre and local biodiversity teams conducted comprehensive medical checks on the whale. Thankfully, it was deemed healthy, with no immediate need for medical intervention.

Fujairah’s waters, known for their vibrant coral reefs and diverse species, are a critical stop for migratory marine life. The emirate’s five marine reserves play a significant role in attracting and protecting creatures like the Bryde's whale, highlighting the ecological importance of the region.

Documented in the Whales and Dolphins book—a key title in the Natural History Books series by the Fujairah Environment Authority—this sighting emphasizes the emirate’s commitment to marine conservation.

Asila Al Mualla, director of the Fujairah Environment Authority, shed light on the species, stating:
“Bryde’s whales, scientifically identified as Balaenoptera edeni, are typically found in warm waters. This young whale, no longer a juvenile but not yet fully mature, has spent several days in the port area. We’re working diligently with specialized teams to ensure it returns safely to its migration path.”

This rare event has not only captivated marine enthusiasts but also reaffirmed Fujairah’s dedication to protecting its natural marine heritage.
