Stargazers in the UAE, get ready for a dazzling celestial treat! The skies are set to light up with a stunning blue supermoon this week, making it the first supermoon of the year.

Visible from Monday to Wednesday, this supermoon will appear larger and brighter due to its closer proximity to Earth, with peak visibility expected around 8 pm.

But don't be fooled by the name—despite being called a "blue" supermoon, the moon won’t actually turn blue. The term, which dates back to 1528, has its roots in folklore and ancient misunderstandings about lunar cycles. According to NASA, while the moon can appear blue in rare atmospheric conditions, the "blue" in this case simply signifies its rarity.

This particular supermoon is also known as the "sturgeon supermoon," named after the sturgeon fish that was traditionally abundant in the Great Lakes during this time of year. The name comes from the Native American tradition, popularized by the Maine Farmers' Almanac in the 1930s.

This spectacle follows the recent Perseids meteor shower, which saw up to 100 meteors streaking across the UAE skies. If you miss this supermoon, don’t fret—the next one is just around the corner, set to grace the skies on September 18, weather permitting.
