Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE, recently visited the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) headquarters. During this visit, he instructed the RTA to study the implementation of the Dh16 billion Main Roads Development Plan for 2024-2027. This ambitious project will introduce 22 vital developments across Dubai’s expanding road network, significantly enhancing urban mobility.

Key Projects in the Main Roads Development Plan

Al Fay Street Development Project

One of the project's cornerstones is the Al Fay Street Development Project. This strategic corridor will stretch from Al Khail Road at its intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, through Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, and extend to Emirates Road.

The project will feature:

  • 12,900 meters of road construction
  • Five new intersections
  • 13,500 meters of bridges

With these improvements, the project will support an additional capacity of approximately 64,400 vehicles per hour, benefiting around 600,000 residents.

Al Safa Street Development Project

Another significant component is the Al Safa Street Development Project, which runs from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Wasl Road. This project will include:

  • 2,100 meters of tunnels, including a two-lane tunnel that provides direct access from Al Safa Street to the City Walk project
  • 650 meters of bridges

This development aims to enhance accessibility and traffic flow in this busy area.

Latifa bint Hamdan Street Development

Set to commence next year, the Latifa bint Hamdan Street development will cover 12,200 meters from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Emirates Road. Key features include:

  • 8,100 meters of bridges
  • Increased capacity for approximately 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions

This project is expected to reduce travel time by 15-20%, serving over 1 million residents.

Meydan Road Development Project

The Meydan Road development will involve:

  • 10,600 meters of roads
  • 3,300 meters of bridges
  • Three tunnels totaling 1,500 meters

This upgrade will accommodate around 1 million residents, adding capacity for 22,000 vehicles per hour and cutting travel time from Umm Suqeim Street to Meydan Street to just four minutes.

Trade Centre Roundabout Improvements

The Trade Centre Roundabout development will see the construction of five bridges totaling 5,000 meters. The roundabout will be transformed into a surface-level intersection controlled by traffic signals, significantly improving traffic flow. This change is expected to reduce delays from 12 minutes to just 90 seconds.

Umm Suqeim and Al Qudra Streets Development

Lastly, the development plans for Umm Suqeim and Al Qudra Streets cover a 16,000-meter stretch from the Jumeirah Street intersection to Emirates Road. This project will include:

  • Development of four intersections
  • 2,500 meters of bridges
  • 2,000 meters of tunnels

These improvements will increase road capacity from 8,400 to 12,600 vehicles per hour, reducing travel time from 46 minutes to just 11 minutes, benefiting over 800,000 residents.

Enhancing Urban Mobility in Dubai

Sheikh Hamdan's directive for the AED 16 billion Main Roads Development Plan underscores Dubai's commitment to enhancing urban mobility. With these key projects, residents can expect improved traffic flow, reduced travel times, and greater capacity on the roads, paving the way for a more connected and efficient city.
