Abu Dhabi has announced a ban on the production, cultivation, and sale of oleander plants. This decision, made by the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA), aims to protect the community, especially children and pets, from the dangers posed by this toxic plant.
The Risks of Oleander
Oleander is a common shrub that can be found in rocky areas and is often planted for its beautiful flowers and lush green leaves. However, every part of this plant is poisonous. The toxins found in oleander can harm the heart and consuming even a small portion can lead to severe health issues like nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, and potentially death.
ADAFSA is urging residents to safely dispose of any oleander plants they may have and to report any violations of this ban. The public is also warned against touching or consuming unfamiliar plants.
For anyone who comes into contact with a toxic plant, they should call the Poison and Drug Information Services (PDIS) hotline at 800424, which operates 24/7.
Compliance with the Ban
Under Resolution No. (4) of 2024, all individuals and businesses must comply with this ban and remove oleander plants within six months from the official announcement. The resolution also mandates regular inspections by authorities to ensure the safe removal of oleander from urban areas and to raise awareness about its dangers.
