Microsoft, a software company that has made significant investments in generative AI and is seen as a potential industry leader announced on Wednesday that it would lay off 10,000 employees and take a $1.2-billion charge as its cloud computing clients analyze their spending and the firm prepares for a potential recession.
The layoff, which is much larger than the job cuts made by Microsoft last year, adds to tens of thousands of job layoffs in the technology industry. The layoffs which affected 5% of the workforce, would terminate by the end of March, Chief Executive Satya Nadella said in a message to employees. Notifications will follow on Wednesday.
Nadella stated, "The next major wave of computing is being born with advances in AI, as we’re turning the world’s most advanced models into a new computing platform." The organization would continue to spend resources and personnel in strategic fields, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and service providing OpenAI's ChatGPT, a futuristic chatbot that has captured Silicon Valley's attention.
The personal computer sector is likewise struggling for the corporation after a pandemic boom burst, leaving little demand for Windows and related software.
