Abu Dhabi Introduces New Rules for Motorcycle Delivery Drivers

Abu Dhabi has issued new rules that say delivery motorcyclists will only be permitted to use the right lane on roads with speed limits of 100 kilometres per hour and above.

They are allowed to use the right two lanes on roads with three or four lanes, use the right three lanes on roads with five lanes.

Motorcycle delivery drivers will also be required to undertake annual testing and certification processes.

The new rules were introduced by Joint Committee for Traffic Safety in Abu Dhabi, presided by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), and included the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), the General Command of the Abu Dhabi Police and the Department of Health.

This move comes with the aim of enhancing traffic safety for all road users and for Abu Dhabi's delivery motorcyclists, in line with the framework aiming to regulate traffic movement on roads.

The plan also includes an initiative to fine-tune the level of qualification, and education and provide continuous training for drivers and motorcyclists working in this sector.

In addition, ITC has developed a training programme for delivery motorcyclists and has implemented an internship programme for supervisors from various delivery companies operating in Abu Dhabi.

The plan also consists of establishing designated parking areas for delivery bikes, with more than 2,800 parking spots in Abu Dhabi and 200 in Al Ain.
