As May 2025 draws closer, several updates will impact daily life for UAE residents, commuters, and travelers. From new bus routes to changes in international travel and a climate law overhaul, here are the key developments you should be ready for.
1. New Dubai–Sharjah Bus Route to Boost Connectivity
On May 2, 2025, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will introduce a new intercity bus route, E308, to improve connectivity between Dubai and Sharjah. The service will run between Stadium Bus Station in Dubai and Al Jubail Bus Station in Sharjah, with a one-way fare set at Dh12. This service aims to make commuting smoother, and alongside it, RTA is also making other adjustments to optimize its intercity bus network.
In addition, Ajman will launch a new bus route starting May 1, connecting Al Musalla Bus Station in Ajman to Al Ain Bus Station, further enhancing travel between emirates.
2. Global Village to Close for the Summer on May 11
One of the UAE's favorite family attractions, Global Village, will close for the summer on May 11 after the end of its 29th season. To celebrate, children under 12 can enter for free, a departure from the usual policy that limits free entry to children under three, seniors over 65, and people of determination. Originally launched in 1997, Global Village has since become a diverse cultural hub, offering over 175 rides, attractions, and 30 pavilions from more than 90 countries.
3. Thailand's Digital Arrival Card Required for Travelers Starting May 1
Travelers heading to Thailand from May 1, 2025, will need to submit a digital arrival card, replacing the previous paper-based TM.6 form. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) must be completed before travel and can be submitted up to three days in advance. This update applies to all types of entry, whether by air, land, or sea. The change, announced at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, is part of Thailand's effort to modernize tourism infrastructure and improve border control.
4. WhatsApp Drops Support for Older iPhones on May 5
If you're using an older iPhone, it's time to update your device. Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1. The affected models include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. This update comes as part of WhatsApp’s effort to ensure better security by discontinuing support for older devices that no longer receive essential updates from Apple.
5. New Climate Change Law in UAE Takes Effect May 30
A groundbreaking climate change law will go into effect in the UAE on May 30, 2025, requiring businesses to measure and manage their greenhouse gas emissions. This move is part of the UAE's broader effort to achieve carbon neutrality and drive innovation in sustainability. The law encourages businesses to adopt greener practices and supports the country’s goals for environmental responsibility and international collaboration on climate solutions.
